Kairee
Another significant role Atul played during this period was of Jadhav Mastar (Jadhav Teacher) in Amol Palekar's 'Kairee'. Jadhav Mastar, a well meaning, good at heart school teacher, but with a stammer, was critically aclaimed. 'Kairee' was also screened at many international festivals.
10-F (Dahavee Pha)
This is a film directed by Sumitra Bhave & Sunil Sukhtankar. It is one of the major hits in last few years. Dahavee Fa - is a story of the underdogs in the educational system, their anger and the channelization of their violent attitude into a positive creative energy with the help of their teacher. Ganesh Deshmukh (Atul Kulkarni), a young, vibrant school teacher on the one hand confronts the discriminatory approach of the school administration based on grading system; on the other puts a challenge before the 10th F boys to channelize their anger in a positive way.
Hey Ram
'Hey Ram' was Atul's first released Hindi/Tamil film. It proved to be a major break through in his career. Kamal Hassan, a veteran actor from India, directed the film. The film was appreciated by the Indian audiences across the globe. The film was selected to represent India for the Oscars.

Atul played Shriram Abhyankar, a Hindu fanatic, which was a pivotal character of the film. It fetched the first National Award for him as a Best Actor in Supporting Role for the year 1999-2000. He was also nominated for other important popular awards.
Chandni Bar

'Chandni Bar' (Dir: Madhur Bhandarkar) was one of the major hits of the year 2001. Atul's role of a gangster, Potya Sawant, gave him the fame. It was a major turn in his career. The audiences loved his portrayal of the character. The role also bagged one more National Award for him.

DUM
In 2002 'Dum' (Dir: E. Niwas) hit the screens. Atul played a corrupt cop for which he received excellent reviews.
Satta
'Satta' (Dir: Madhur Bhandarkar) hit the theatres in 2003. He portrayed a smart and shrewd politician in the film.
88 Antop Hill
The next film in 2003 was '88 Antop Hill' (Dir: Kushan Nandi). He portrayed a common man caught in a conspiracy. The film is a murder mystery and is loosely based on James Hadley Chase's novel Tiger By The Tail.
Khakee
Khakee is a 2004 Indian action drama film, with political thriller elements, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. Atul starred with Amitabh Bachchan. The film tells the story of an Indian police team set out on a dangerous mission to transfer the accused Pakistani spy Iqbal Ansari from Chandangarh to Mumbai.

Delhi-6
Delhi-6 is a 2009 Indian film directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. The story is reportedly based on Mehra's growing up years in Chandni Chowk area of Old Delhi.
Jail
Jail is a Hindi movie directed by Madhur Bhandarkar. Jail tells the story of Parag Dixit (Neil Nitin Mukesh) who is having a peaceful life with his girlfriend Mansi, played by Mugdha Godse. But his life takes a turn and he ends up in jail due to some unfortunate events. The film is a take on the cruel realities faced by prisoners in Indian jails by focusing on Parag's life in the jail. If you watch him in that climax scene of Movie, it makes very clear as to what he has in his mind, while portraying his character of a defense lawyer. Indeed, Atul has succeeded in inviting the attention of one and all in that few minutes scene.
Yeh Mera India
Yeh Mera India YMI (also named Y.M.I. Yeh Mera India) is a 2009 Hindi movie, written and directed by N. Chandra. Yeh Mera India focuses on the comprehensive lifestyle of Mumbai, with a special focus on the biases that permeate the corner of its society.
