Another significant role Atul played during this period was of Jadhav Mastar (Jadhav Teacher) in Amol Palekar's 'Kairee'. Jadhav Mastar, a well meaning, good at heart school teacher, but with a stammer, was critically aclaimed. 'Kairee' was also screened at many international festivals.
10-F (Dahavee Pha)
This is a film directed by Sumitra Bhave & Sunil Sukhtankar. It is one of the major hits in last few years. Dahavee Fa - is a story of the underdogs in the educational system, their anger and the channelization of their violent attitude into a positive creative energy with the help of their teacher. Ganesh Deshmukh (Atul Kulkarni), a young, vibrant school teacher on the one hand confronts the discriminatory approach of the school administration based on grading system; on the other puts a challenge before the 10th F boys to channelize their anger in a positive way.
'Hey Ram' was Atul's first released Hindi/Tamil film. It proved to be a major break through in his career. Kamal Hassan, a veteran actor from India, directed the film. The film was appreciated by the Indian audiences across the globe. The film was selected to represent India for the Oscars.
Atul played Shriram Abhyankar, a Hindu fanatic, which was a pivotal character of the film. It fetched the first National Award for him as a Best Actor in Supporting Role for the year 1999-2000. He was also nominated for other important popular awards.
